about

IMPULSE: SEASON 1 Original Series Soundtrack features the show’s original score by DERU, also known as the Emmy-winning composer, Benjamin Wynn. The 10-episode Sci-Fi series, created by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, The Edge of Tomorrow), is 100% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and is now available for streaming on YouTube Premium.

DERU on creating the sound for IMPULSE:
“The inspiration for the score focused around the Cristal Baschet, a French instrument that involves getting your fingers wet and rubbing glass rods that make two metal radiators vibrate and come to life. They’re hard to come by, but I happened to meet a player, Lenka Moravkova, that was in LA at the time. The first night we got together I came up with the main theme just by playing a few notes on it. The sound itself seemed to match with the vibe of the show.

In addition to recordings, the instrument worked its way into the score in subtler ways. I tapped on the radiators with drumsticks and sent synths through those impulse responses to make them sound like they were coming out of it. The Cristal Baschet became the sound of the show that I composed the other music around.

IMPULSE is the first score that I’ve written under the DERU moniker. The show allowed me to be in my element and write mostly dark ambient electronic music. Functionally, the music was able to hold the tension and grittiness of the plot without being too overt, which is some of my favorite stuff to write. The showrunner [Doug Liman] and producers were so great to work with that I knew I could trust my instincts, and being able to go for it and ‘do what I do’ was a gift.”

About IMPULSE:
IMPULSE is a genre-bending action-thriller from Universal Cable Productions (UCP) that is now streaming on YouTube Premium. Hypnotic’s Doug Liman (“Bourne Identity,” “Live. Die. Repeat:  Edge of Tomorrow”) executive produced the series. Hypnotic’s David Bartis and Gene Klein, who produce UCP’s hit series “Suits,” served as executive producers. Lauren LeFranc (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”) also served as an executive producer and the series showrunner. IMPULSE features a rebellious 16-year-old girl “Henry” played by Maddie Hasson (“Twisted,” “The Finder”).  Missi Pyle (“Gone Girl,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) plays “Henry’s” mother “Cleo.” Henry has always felt different from her peers and has longed to escape from her seemingly quaint small town. She soon discovers she has the extraordinary ability to teleport. #ImpulseSeries

About DERU:
Benjamin Wynn is an Emmy Award winning American composer, sound designer and music producer.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the California Institute of the Arts, and has released 4 albums under the name “Deru”, as well as scored television, film, and dance.
Wynn was the co-owner and founder of a music and sound design company in Los Angeles called The Track Team along with Jeremy Zuckerman. Together they worked on numerous projects, including “Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "Legend of Korra” for Nickelodeon. They won an Emmy Award for music editing for “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness” in 2012, and another Emmy for the same project in 2015.

In 2007, Wynn (as Deru) collaborated with British composer Joby Talbot on the score to Wayne McGregor’s ballet, Genus, based on Charles Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species, commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet. The ballet premiered at the Palais Garnier in October 2007 and was commissioned for a second round of performances in November 2009. The ambitious eight-part score combines electronics with a 10-part choir and string instruments. The score is available on Ant-Zen and Dear Oh Dear Records and was featured in the 2009 documentary, La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet.

In addition to his scoring work, Wynn is a founding member and Creative Director of The Echo Society, a Los Angeles based composer collective and non-profit organization that premiers new orchestral works in singular, one-night-only events.
